New California law bans talking on cell phone while driving, unless it's hands-free

According to the new law you will no longer be able to use a cell phone while driving unless you have a 'hands free' adapter. I went to Circuit City and they wanted $50 for a headset with a microphone for my cell phone. Having a friend in the cell phone business, I talked with him and was able to come up with an alternative, working through Office Depot.

These kits are compatible with any mobile phone and one size fits all. I paid him $0.08 each because he bought in quantity. Then we tried it with Motorola, Sprint, Verizon and Nokia units and they worked perfectly.

A photo is attached so scroll down and take a look and let me know if you want one. Also, forward this to anyone you know, who has a cell phone, and who may want one!

Bottled water: Healthy choice or stupid, vain, wasteful indulgence?

I guess by the title you can guess my answer.

Some interesting tidbits from the article:
  • At Whole Foods (NASDAQ:WFMI), the upscale emporium of the organic and exotic, bottled water is the number-one item by units sold.
  • Bottled water is often simply an indulgence, and despite the stories we tell ourselves, it is not a benign indulgence. We're moving 1 billion bottles of water around a week in ships, trains, and trucks in the United States alone. That's a weekly convoy equivalent to 37,800
18-wheelers delivering water. (Water weighs 81/3 pounds a gallon. It's so heavy you can't fill an 18-wheeler with bottled water--you have to leave empty space.)
  • And in Fiji, a state-of-the-art factory spins out more than a million bottles a day of the hippest bottled water on the U.S. market today, while more than half the people in Fiji do not have safe, reliable drinking water.

Bush loses immigration reform battle

Some say Bush now on sidelines of issue - USATODAY.com

In what could have been a rare and stunning political win for Bush, the tables were turned and now he's in the corner of the White House trying to find his happy place.

After Dick Cheney deserted him (the VP is NOT part of the Executive branch), George had the immigration bill to hang his legacy on.

Supreme Court send US back 100 years: Price fixing now legal

Supreme Court OKs retail price fixing by manufacturers - Los Angeles Times

Manufacturers are now allowed to prohibit retailers from discounting their products. This will have two immediate effects.

First, retailers will be less inclined to "take a chance" on something that may not sell. This will have the market effect, I think, of less choice for the consumer, leading, of course, to lowered supply and higher prices. Score one for big manufacturers.

But here's another one: What about gasoline stations? If Chevron forbids an independent dealer from selling below cost (gasoline, after all, for the dealer, is a loss-leader or very close to a loss-leader), this may effectively send the dealer to another line of business. Again, supply is driven down, raising prices.

It makes sense. If you put a floor on prices, which this ruling does, prices cannot deflate beyond that floor. So, the Supreme Court sent our market-based economy packing, in favor of already-dominant manufacturers.

SCOTUS is deeply out-of-touch with the real world and how it works. Adam Smith believed that people, acting out of their own self-interest, would keep the market humming along.

Leave it to the government to f--ck it all up.

British government gets it right: Intelligent design has no place in science curriculum

UK Gov boots intelligent design back into 'religious' margins | The Register

I think we, the US, have gone back a couple hundred years in our development -- the UK is way ahead of us in terms of science education.

Let's go a bit further and keep religion out of school.

Period.

There's a perfectly good place to teach intelligent design and creationism: The churches. They're already subsidized, in effect, by the government, in the form of zero tax liability. Real businesses are expected to pay taxes. Religious entities are not, though they make a ton of money.

And now that the US government, at least, is allowed to pour money into church coffers, the line between big government and big business is completely blurred.

Let's at least keep church out of schools. That's decidedly not the place for it. After all, schools are meant for teaching kids how to think. Churches -- through "faith" -- are not. It's dogma.

Challenge the church's teachings and you challenge god.

Bush to veto stem cell bill - Yahoo! News

Currently, states and private organizations are permitted to fund embryonic stem cell research, but federal support is limited to cells that existed as of Aug. 9, 2001. The latest bill is aimed at lifting that restriction.
I think some crafty lawyers have to get together and conjure up an age-discrimination class-action lawsuit on behalf of those 'old' stem cells. Why us? Why can you destroy us but you cannot destroy the younger stem cells?

After all, the way these zealots think, stem cells are tantamount to live human beings, so of course they can bring a lawsuit.

White House misused RNC emails and blames Clinton

The Raw Story | White House may have committed 'extensive' violations of Records Act, says Oversight Committee

When does one simply stop caring for his or her country and give up? So many violations. So many ethical breaches. So many morally questionable acts. By the country we love.

When will it stop? Hint: Not January 20, 2009. All governments are corrupt. Until the courts stymie the ransacking of our democracy by the Executive branch, not a damned thing will change for the better, only for the worse.

Get this:

White House spokesman Tony Snow in his daily press briefing said that White House e-mail use was based on Clinton administration policy.

"Those e-mail accounts were set up on a model based on the prior administration which had done it the same way in order to avoid Hatch Act violations," he noted. "Any e-mails sent to or received from a White House e-mail account is automatically archived, and the RNC has had an e-mail preservation policy for White House staffers as well. We should have been through this, I'm not sure exactly when the start-date was, we'll just have to see how Counsel's office responds to Rep. Waxman's request."

Can I tell you how much I can't stand Tony Snow and his double-speaking, backstabbing, unaccountable-for-anything stances on all matters?

I think I just did.

It's amazing he can look in the mirror each day and not want to shoot himself. Or maybe there are no mirrors in his house. At best, they're all made of frosted glass.

Fuel me once, shame on you, fuel me twice shame on me

The Naked Economist, Charles Wheelan, writes a very good article on why our government needs to stay out of the gas business. They're now proposing, in a pathetic bipartisan way, a subsidy to the coal industry to produce diesel.

What a mistake this would be.

Let's just let the market dictate prices, okay? Subsidies are for the public good. They're to encourage or discourage behavior that wouldn't otherwise be undertaken.

If the coal industry is in need of a subsidy to produce an alternative to oil, then it's not really worth doing, as the outcome is a lower gas price, more plentiful fossil fuel (and not a lessening of our dependence on fuel nor a lowering of our greenhouse gases).

Giuliani Takes A Swipe At Bush, GOP Frontrunner Complains U.S. Lacks "Strong, Aggressive, Bold Leadership" - CBS News

I know Reagan wasn't the greatest President ever (who is?), but he surely is the best I've seen in my lifetime (I'm not that old, unless you ask my son). Bush is at Nixon levels, Giuliani is at McGovern levels (meaning, he shouldn't talk because he doesn't know what being president is, for he hasn't -- and heaven forbid -- become president).

Great argument for why the government ought to stay out of your and my business

Greg Mankiw's Blog: A Veto Threat

Furthermore, they should stay out of business. Price gouging. The only price gougers with respect to gasoline are the oil companies. They control the supply.

Gas station owners don't. My grandparents were service station owners back in the late 60s, early 70s. They got out during the first oil embargo. Why? They made no money when prices rose (supply costs went up way faster than they could raise their prices).

Now the government wants to control price increases. Nixon tried this in during the early 70s and called in price caps. In any event, the government knows nothing about business. Therefore, they should keep away from it.

Honda is committing infanticide on its Accord hybrid

Honda's pricey Accord hybrid runs out of gas - Los Angeles Times

Honda sold a measly 439 Accord hybrids in the United States last month. By contrast, Toyota Motor Corp. sold 24,009 of its less-expensive, segment-leading Priuses. And sales of hybrid vehicles as a segment more than doubled this year, while the overall market for new vehicles is flat.
Quite sad, I'd say, but there no doubt is a reason for the crummy sales -- Toyota beat them at the game, the Accord wasn't focused on fuel efficiency so much as the rice rocket crowd.

The base sticker on the 2007 model is $31,685, compared with $26,820 for its closest competitor, the Toyota Camry hybrid sedan.

Those extra dollars don't provide much relief at the gas pump.

The
Accord's combined city-highway mileage of 31 miles per gallon is
respectable for any car but hardly in the same league with the Prius at
55 mpg or Honda's own Civic hybrid at 50 mpg.

Who knows?), but I do know this: Some of them undoubtedly were at the wrong place at the wrong time and they've spent years in prison, not ever knowing whether they'd be released or tried fairly under America's better justice system.

Leading by example. Not the US anymore, unless the example is one of shoot first, never ask any questions. Got that, Dick?

Scooter Libby gets 30 months for lying

Paris Hilton in jailbird pinstripes

She's not even hot in prison garb. Maybe if she does some lesbo sex on camera? Shower scene? Anything?

No, she'll never be sexy or attractive. She looks like she's the inbred result of a hotel magnate and a poodle.

By most accounts, Larry Lindsey is an economic hack

I don't remember where I read it, but this Lawrence Lindsey is not well-respected in the economics arena.
Lawrence Lindsey, George W. Bush's issues adviser in the 1999-2000 run-up to his presidential candidacy, is poised to play a similar role in Fred Thompson's imminent campaign.
But leave it to Fred Flintstone to hire him. He's hired other hacks before.

The difference between dogs and cats and people

At the base level, we're all animals. It's been said that the difference between man and other animals is that man has the ability to think in spite of his instincts.

I think it's simpler than that.

Dogs and cats (and most other animals) have tails. Man does not.

But the real difference is man knows he has no tail and dogs and cats think they have no tail. This is why they chase it.

That, to me, is the biggest difference between man and animal.

Newly appointed Surgeon General can cure gays

Great. Another religious freak in the White House. This one supposedly a doctor. Who can "cure" gays.

Of what?

Dr Death is out of prison, ready to kill again

I think the concept behind his madness is sound. We put our pets to sleep when there's no hope for quality of life or when they're in pain. Why not our parents, for example?

But this guy's a kook.

US Attorney Tim Griffin resigns

Good riddance!

Maybe now he'll lead Fred Flintstone's campaign (that's Fred Thompson).

President and VP hiding visitor logs

I understand as well as anyone the importance and necessity of keeping some conversations private. But the Bush administration is as closed a presidential office as any other -- perhaps even more than the Nixon administration.

It is important that the president be able to receive candid advice from his staff and other members of the administration," Fratto said. "To ensure that he receives candid advice, it is essential as a general matter that the advice remains confidential."

First off, we're not talking about staff. We're talking about two specific things, I believe -- VP Cheney's Energy Task Force and the Jack Abramoff scandal. These are visitor logs. If you work at the White House, by definition, you are not a visitor.

These are truly visitor logs. People from outside the administration.

It is assumed, fed by the secrecy, that the Cheney meetings were with industry insiders like Ken Lay and Enron. Of course, Cheney and Bush stood, and still stand, to gain millions of dollars for themselves and their cronies if energy prices soared.

Lo and behold: Energy prices soared. And continue. No end in sight (January 2009 is a milestone I hope we reach without the Repugnicans in power).

The second reason for the purported necessity of keeping confidential the "visitor logs" is the Abramoff scandal. We all have our suspicions that ol' Jack met with Rove (the 2nd coming of that popular Communist, Karl Marx), Cheney, and the prez himself. We've all seen the pictures of Jack and George...

These guys are clearly hiding. The real question is, will they keep this crap up when they're out of office? Of course they will. And they'll have plenty of time to fight it. Right now, there are too many scandals for them to focus on just one. But come February 2009, you can bet Georgie will be up to his eyeballs in lawyers. He'll surely start a legal defense fund real soon.

Tuberculosis patient is a moron and so is his entire family

I am no medical doctor. Nor am I an expert on TB. But this guy is a lawyer (I wonder where he can practice, since he clearly is an idiot. I'm betting Florida or Texas) and his new father in law is an expert microbiologist who works for the CDC. His expertise? Tuberculosis. Gee I wonder how he got this...

Doctors hope to determine where he contracted the disease, which has been found around the world and exists in pockets in Russia and Asia. The tuberculosis was discovered by accident when Speaker had a chest X-ray in January for a rib injury, Huitt said.

So dipshit has TB for 5 months, goes to Europe, and exposes hundreds, if not thousands, of people and says, "I hope they forgive me."

What an idiot!
