Sympathy Oscars: Heath Ledger Wins Posthumously

So it's no secret by now that Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his role in The Dark Knight as the Joker.

I have not seen the movie, but I hear it's fantastic. But I think the Academy Awards ought to be run like a raffle, as in,

"You must be present to win."
Ledger is only the second person to win an Oscar while dead. There's not much acting going on there!
In fact, let's not forget the best acting performance -- EVER -- in a movie, when Sylvester Stallone had a heart-rending final scene with Richard Crenna in First Blood, where he said, and I quote:
Blah, mrkgoh, gra ARRRGGHHG! My Fathhrreegg wannthharrr!

That, my friends, was true acting. Nobody can be that bad. Ledger has nothing on Johnny Rambo! Yet they both have Oscars now.

The Susan B Anthony Amendment, Anyone?

One of my favorite "new" places to browse online is Google Trends. Here is where the almighty google showcases their "hottest" searches for the day.

I never really quite get why a search terms shows up there, from either a technical standpoint (how does google rank this?) or from a "what the hell are people typing that into google for?" perspective.

For example, the term, "susan b anthony amendment" is the hottest term on google right now.

Why?

Yes, it's named for the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. That's a pretty big deal, for now we men have another demographic to blame for all of our societal ills.

But you want to know why the term is so hot? Because it was on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. OH my freaking god.

Here's irony at its finest.
  • Women were given the right to vote in 1920
  • Women make up the largest portion of the "daytime TV" audience
  • Women don't know the answer to the question on an infinitely stupid gameshow called Who Wants to Be a Millionaire
  • Women google the term
  • Women show that perhaps they don't deserve to vote or own property, unless it's a purse or something else totally impractical, like high heels, another wallet, or another purse
I'm not trying to offend women. I guess it just comes naturally!

Little Big Town: Fleetwood Mac Meets The Eagles

I had seen Little Big Town in concert with Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac fame before and thought to myself how remarkable they sounded together. I just picked up their latest CD, A Place To Land, and it's

P-H-E-N-O-M-E-N-A-L

(that was hard to type!)

If you like Fleetwood Mac or The Eagles (or both, like me!), then check out A Place to Land by Little Big Town!

I can (and have!) listened to this CD again and again. It hasn't gotten old yet. It's really good, timeless music.

U2 on Letterman for a Full Week - March 2 through 6

Finally, some good news in the music world! U2 is going to be on for a full week on David Letterman (the Late Show).

After the two "mistakes" the Boss made last week, this is a breath of fresh air. It's amazing how U2 continues to stay relevant after so many years. Man, they've stayed on top for a couple decades now. And I got to see them in concert a couple of years ago!
